Math Kangaroo Host Test Center

SWVGS first served as a host site for this international mathematics competition for students from grades one through 12 in 2012. In 2013, we were happy to welcome over 100 students from across Southwest Virginia and neighboring states to participate in the Math Kangaroo contest at SWVGS.

In 2014, the Southwest Virginia Governor's School hosted the Math Kangaroo USA competition for the third time. This annual mathematical competition, which takes place every year on the third Thursday in March, originated in Australia and now has over 6 million participants from nearly 60 countries in grades 1-12 throughout the world. Representatives from participating countries collaborate to choose the competition's thought-provoking questions based in mathematical areas of algebra, geometry, and logic. The competition (www.mathkangaroo.org) aims to help students gain confidence in mathematics, understand application of mathematics to everyday situations, demonstrate that math education is important throughout the world, and to encourage mastery.

Participants who place at State and National Levels are recognized at the SWVGS Academic Banquet each May. Math Kangaroo provides awards to students who place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the state and/or 1st through 15th in the nation.

SWVGS will continue to serve as a host school for Math Kangaroo - International Contest in Mathematics:

  • This contest will be held at SWVGS on the date designated by Math Kangaroo each March.
  • Students are invited to complete a math contest designed specifically for their grade level and have an opportunity to demonstrate their math skills.
  • Interested students are required to visit www.mathkangaroo.org to register by the Math Kangaroo deadline.
  • Participants will receive a t-shirt, certificate, and gift on the day of the test. Top winners receive medals, grants, and other awards; these will be distributed at the SWVGS Academic Banquet in May.

School divisions, teachers, counselors, and gifted resource teachers are encouraged to identify interested students. Please distribute information about this math contest to students with high aptitude for math. If a student is interested in registering for the math contest, they should visit www.mathkangaroo.org to register and should contact Sherry Pugh, SWVGS coordinator of the math contest.
