How SWVGS is Governed

The Governor's School is a secondary gifted program for students who are eligible and interested in science and mathematics for the school systems served by SWVGS. We provide an accelerated and enriched curriculum for gifted and high ability students. The program allows participants to be part of a regional community of learners of similar academic aptitude. The Governor's School is included as part of the local plans for the gifted as a curriculum program for high school students.

The program is funded through tuition paid by the participating school divisions and the Virginia Department of Education. Each participating school district selects one member of their School Board to serve on the Governing Board of the Southwest Virginia Governor's School. Policies related to the development, implementation, and operation of the program are generated through the combined efforts of the Southwest Virginia Governor's School Governing Board, school administrators, and faculty members. Dates for SWVGS Governing Board meetings are listed on the SWVGS Academic Year Calendar online. Meetings are typically held in room 162B of Godbey Hall at New River Community College.

The Radford City Public School system serves as the fiscal agent for the Governor's School. Superintendent Dr. Terry Arbogast from Giles County Public Schools currently serves as the Superintendent-in-Charge. The Governor's School is led by the Director, Rebecca Phillips, who also teaches  Biology Courses and Science and Technology Seminar and Project Courses and the Assistant Director, Sherry Pugh, who teaches Mathematics Courses and Science and Technology Seminar and Project Courses.
